This is how you beat procrastination with an online business. Forget the tech side, advertising, goal setting and how you’re going to make it. Don’t try and make your site look pretty or professional. I bet you’re looking at this site and thinking, yeah, this site looks pretty basic.
Making things hard for yourself is what leads to inaction.
The very steps for failure. Focussing on too many activities, when all you need to do is focus on one activity, is tiring. Only work on one thing, in creating a working website you only need to focus on writing.
The real work is being able to talk endlessly about a subject you love. Your first goal is to find out what you like and write about it. You also need to be passionate about it too.
I am passionate at helping people become successful. I’ve had a wealth of experience in business, but, this is new to me. What I can help with is making you focus on the things that will make you successful from my experience of business.
You won’t get a lot of useless information, but, you will get a lot of repetition.
This is my second post and although the process seems quite daunting, I am enjoying flexing my writing muscles. There may be a lot of bleh, but, it’s good bleh.
This is my first post: Online Procrastinators
Goal Setting
It’s funny how we all think about goal setting. You find something you want and decide when you’re going to get it.
To me, it’s a little bit backward. Think of this, if you want to cross the road you don’t say well next Wednesday I’ll cross the road, I’ll need some shoes, a coat and I mustn’t forget to bring water and then I can achieve my goal of crossing the road.
You just walk across the road, you go to the shops without a goal, although you may have a shopping list.
It really is the same with blogging. Just write. That’s what blogging is all about.
In case you missed it, here is a free copy of Procrastinators To Do List. Make sure you check your junk mail for the confirmation.
Even as I write this I’m wondering how I can turn this into a valuable post, but, I may not.
So, write when you’re in front of the TV, write when you’re on the toilet, write when you’re in a waiting room, write when your partner is driving you somewhere, write when you’re having coffee, write when you can’t sleep.
Your writing will suck at first, but that’s okay. Think of any craftsperson, when they first start. they turn out crap.
You only get good by practising, practising, practising.
Everything else is a distraction. WordPress is a distraction – you only need to know how to post. Keywords are a distraction, if you write well this will become obsolete. Google will love you, your avatar* will love you.
I’ve heard from a number of people who are worried that their site doesn’t look good, they can’t understand keywords, categories, meta titles/ descriptions. They all mean diddly squat if you have no content.
Think of your posts as meat and the theme as garnish. If you don’t have at least 20-50 posts written and posted, you basically have a pea on your plate and no amount of garnish is going to have people flocking to try your pea.
By writing lots of good content to your avatar, google will send people your way. When that happens, then you’re ready to monetise, then you can add garnish to your feast. People will be hungry for crumbs off your table.
All those shares on Facebook are from people who write. If you want to be shared on FB then write compelling material. How do you write compelling material? You guessed it, write, write, write.
If you’ve read this far you must be my avatar*. If you’re saying please shut up, you’re not my avatar*.
Keywords, Meta Descriptions, Meta Titles, Taglines, and Tags.
I will be discussing these at a later date. You will need these once you have at least ten posts published.
If you’re stuck on content, this article will help you; How to Create Great Content.
I wish you all success.
Don’t get caught up in time management, goal setting, tech stuff, making your site look pretty etc, just write. All the other stuff will come naturally the more you write.
What I’m saying is cross the road by hook or by crook, don’t get caught up in the trappings. Write so much that you can’t wait to see what you’ll write next, then and only then will you have your avatar* because they will be as excited as you.
So get writing even if you use Word or notes on your phone or a piece of paper, get it out. In my next post, I will show you how to set up a website in easy steps, but, only to my subscribers. (Make sure you check your junk mail). It won’t be techie, it’ll make you wonder why you haven’t done this before.
You should work on having at least 20 posts written. Don’t edit them, don’t try and make them perfect, just get them out. Don’t worry about grammar.
Trust me, you get better with age.
Making an income requires you to write as often as you possibly can. That doesn’t mean you’ll post them straight away.
*An avatar is a person you decide will read your material. How old they are, what occupation they have, whether married or single, etc.
I found this helpful as I am a terrible procrastinator. I loved the “pea on a plate” analogy. So, no more procrastination for me! I’ll just go make a coffee and start. 😉
LOL!!! My sentiments exactly. You just need toast to go with it.
Thank you for breaking this down into bite sized pieces. You are indeed writing to me!
I’m glad that you’re finding this post useful. I know how we are all so caught up in life and forget how important it is to build our websites and start earning. It’s a job.
